What’s a Meeting Like?

Thanks for taking interest in a Brewins meeting, my goal is to give a good idea what a typical meeting is like such as  meeting rules, code of conduct, cadence and atmosphere.  I hope to make a potential member feel comfortable to show up to our beer focused laid-back club meeting.  Check our site’s Club Meeting section for current meeting and location info.  Feel free to show up at our next meeting or contact [email protected] for more information.

  • Club meetings are typically held on the third Friday of odd numbered months.
  • Even numbered months the club hangs out at a local brewery, for beer and often a tour of the brewery.

6:30 pm optional social hour

  • Social hour is a good time to eat dinner (if you want to bring or pick up at local restaurants), drink commercial beers, hang-out, and talk about non-meeting related items.
  • Check in Style of the Month beers to member for later competition
  • Put on white board home brews to share

7:00 pm Meeting starts

  • The President goes over club meeting rules
    • NO religion talk
    • NO political talk – only exception is during club board member voting month
    • NO cross talking – respect everyone’s ability to talk and be heard.  Social hour was added to help with cross talking
    • NO irresponsible drinking.  Don’t drink & drive and don’t get hammered.  We are a homebrew club not a drinking club
    • NO commercial beer during meeting other than Mystery Beer (described below)
  • Between meeting agenda items, we share our homebrew.  Each member discusses the brew while being poured
  • President calls for an officer report.  Club Vice President, Treasure, Secretary, and Member at Large give updates

Typical agenda- Below list some of the activities that are done at club meetings.  Not all the activities are done at each meeting.

  • Upcoming Events – Open to all members to talk about any up and coming events which might interest the members, or charity events that the club is pouring at.  Each year the club donates to several local charities by brewing, pouring and promoting local events, such as Sober Grad, High School Boosters, and American Legion.
  • Prior Events Status – Updates on previous club events and current club programs such as the sour barrel and whisky stout barrel projects.
  • Guest speaker or lecture.  In the past we have had local breweries give talks and members have given brew education sessions such as yeast propagation & health, sour beer basics, and water chemistry.
  • Gadget of the month – Many homebrewers love the gadgets that are involved in making better more efficient brew.  This is a time for members to tell about a new product or gadget they are using or recently seen and want advice or to tell other members about.
  • Dr. homebrew-  All homebrewers at some point will brew a beer that is not great.  Sometimes the brewer has a good idea what they did wrong, but many times they have no idea.  This is the time that a member can pour their beer and get non-judgmental feedback on how to what could be wrong with and how to fix their brew.  This time is also dedicated to beer off flavor sensory training by learning what off flavors taste like and their causes.
  • Mystery beer-  An unknown commercial beer is poured to club members.  Each member guesses it’s ABV, IBU, BJCP style and beer.  The winner earns a prize.  This doubles as BJCP judge training for several of our members who are or intend to be BJCP judge certified.
  • Style of the quarter -Every three months there is a selected style which members can brew and bring to the meeting for a club night competition.  The best beer to the style wins the “Golden Growler”.  The Golden Growler is a gold colored growler filled with a local breweries beer.  All the styles are chosen a year in advance around October.  The styles are chosen from the BJCP 2015 style guidelines and are intended to get brewers to brew something out of their comfort zone.  Every year there are a couple non BJCP style beers such as cookie beer, extreme low alcohol beer, candy beer, mead, or cider.

9PM Club meeting ends

  • Drive time social hour.  As hard as we try not to drink too much at the meeting, sometimes a little more time is needed prior to hitting the road.  After the meeting we have a post meeting social hour either at a walking distance member house, Taqueria Mexican Restaurant,  Starbucks or just hang out in the parking lot.
